Meals on Wheels is a non profit community organization which provides nutritional meals to persons who find it difficult to purchase or prepare meals for themselves.

Eligibility for Meals on Wheels is based on nutritional need, age, disability or person recuperating at home after hospitalization. This service is not limited to any particular age, race, or socioeconomic group.

Client contributions are based on a sliding income scale and are based on actual food cost of meals. We offer a one or two meal plan. Week-end frozen meals are also available. Some persons pay the established fees, others pay a reduced fee based on financial ability to pay. Special programs are available to assist those who qualify, providing meals at no cost.

Check, Cash, Debit, Credit and Food Stamps are accepted.

Yes! We will not leave a meal unless you are there to receive it. A wellness check is part of our delivery. If you do not answer the door your contact person will be notified immediately.

Special diets are prepared under the direction of a hospital dietitian as ordered by the recipient's physician. Diets available are:

Low Fat

Each meal consists of a full lunch with a hot entrée, two vegetables, and is accompanied by a cold portion (normally consisting of a roll, salad or fruit), providing at least 1/3 of the adult daily recommended diet.

Our meals are prepared by Northwest Indiana Meals on Wheels kitchen staff. Menus are approved by professional dietitians.

Meals are delivered to your home between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM each day Monday through Friday.

Volunteers deliver meals assuming their own transportation expenses. Remember to be kind and pleasant to your volunteer. Their gift of time is precious to all of us.

No, Meals on Wheels is closed for all major holidays so our employees and volunteers can enjoy time with their families.

Meals on Wheels follows the snow closures with Michigan City Area Schools. On a rare occasion, we must cancel meal delivery to ensure the safety of our volunteers due to dangerous road conditions.  When the schools are closed due to a major storm and hazardous road conditions we will not deliver meals. Emergency food boxes are given to all meal recipients to be used during winter cancellation of meal delivery.  Local radio WIMS am and WEFM fm will announce weather related closings.

Yes. Please contact MOW office before 10 AM the day before you need to cancel.  Provide us with 24 hours notice so a meal will not be ordered or prepared.
